Default Timing Chain

So...LT1 Timing Sets are silly pricey...My question is what do you guys do when it comes time for a set, whats the most economical route?

I was wondering also, if you run a EWP can you use just an old school timing chain or gears?..

Yeah thats what i did. Bought a double roller timing set for an 86 up SBC and rock and roll. Have to remove the water pump drive from the block and plug the timing cover where the drive would normally go thru. Install your EWP as usual and its instant sweetness. Im pretty sure you have to have a 95+ (pin drive) opti/timing cover to go that route though. I believe the early opti has splines on the cam gear that the shaft that drives the opti goes in, and the old school timing chain will not have provisions for that.

How many miles are on the car? If the sprockets look good I would just buy a new GM chain for about $40-50 or so. I have had great luck doing just that myself.
