Default alternator problems

i have a ls1 in my rock crawler its been in for about a 1 1/2, its a 99 modle motor the alternator is hooked up through the factory computer with a 8 gauge charge wire the new one worked fine for about the first year then it went out did not think much about it, put a new one on and it lasted one ride another new one and it did not last the whole ride i had to leave early i wander if i need to put a light in the line instead of the factory wire or do you think i need to put more grounds i am just loooking to fix the problem. the only stuff it runs is the motor and 2 fans and the fuel pump

Did the engine come out of a vette or an fbody?

Maybe this doesn't help, but my 99 alternator that I swapped into the rx7 got modified for the later self exciting regulator. I read a lot of stories of people burning up earlier alternators so I ordered the $60 newer regulator and installed it (a little soldering). Now it works like a one wire without the connection to the ECU. I haven't had any problems so far.

98 LS1 in my firebird. The alt wouldn't charge. It ran at about 9 volts. I had to wire and exciter wire off the 4 prong plug to get it to work. I have the wire info if you need it, I'll have to look for it.
