Engine for conversion - basic questions
I'm planning a LS1 conversion for my C3 Corvette & have gathered a bunch of info on how to get it done thanks to this forum and others.
Looking for a little advice on what to look for in the engine I pick up.
What I've found so far is a 98 Firebird engine & 4L60E (and associated wiring and PCM) locally for $2000 -- w/120k miles.
What are the problem areas to expect with a setup of this mileage?
Would I be better off to pick up this setup with the intent of probalby going through it - or finding a much lower mileage & later setup for a higher initial cost?
What are the typical costs to be expected for an engine/trans combo - is $2000 for what I've found so far decent?

I would look for a 99 and newer with less miles. The 97-98 motors have unique PCMs that will reduce your flexibility and options later on. Also the early LS1's have limited ability for overbore, just .005, so chances to clean up cylinders are limited. You should be able to find a 20-30k motor in the $3500-4500 range. In the long run, I believe you will be better off by finding a better motor to start with.

You should stick with the F-Body or Vette setup.. as The Oil Pans and Front accessories are more in line with fitting your C3. Else if you go with a 5.3L truck engine, you will end up getting the F-Body oil pan and front accessories anyway and spend both time and money chasing down these parts. I beleive that the F-Body pans will fit from what I have read or at lease is where you want to start with if you need to modify it.
With a LS1, you are also saving 80-100 lbs of weigth... being a vette, I would think you are watching your weight.
Also, If you use the LS1 or LS6 intake, your hood clearance will be ok, If you go with the 5.3L truck.. you either have to pickup a LS1/6 or cut you hood.
Just go with either the LS1/6 from a F-Body or Vette.
