If you are indeed just putting everything back together, but using studs vs. bolts, then YES, your machine shop is correct.
Now, having said that, some will say that if you have everything apart and the engine is already at a shop which can align hone it (only taking off 0.0005" or so...) then that is always a good idea...
The $64K question is can that shop hone the mains? If they can, and won't charge you an arm and a leg, then it is just a good idea, as straight is good.

i think if the motors apart and geting new bearings then no...if its not apart and your trying to stick them in then you need new bearings...it will flex the cap slightly differant, which will mess with a old bearing and the way its already worn....
a line hone will make sure the mains for the crank is straight and true which they should be able to do cheap...les than 25 bux

well i'm building a 355, and the motor is gonna be spun up to 6500. so i wanted everything to be nice straight to avoid spinning a main. which is why i was suprised to hear him say i wouldn't need it.

if you had a splayed 4 bolt main conversion done you could spin it higher than that without worrying-about the mains. either way i think its good to do new main bearings- somebody correct me if im wrong
