Please check my gear pattern (used set of GM gears)
I just installed a used set of 3.73 gears in my 10 bolt.
I have no idea if this is good or not.
I have the backlash set where i was aiming for= .006 . I know that this is kinda on the tight side but im guessing tighter is better for the track longevity, and bad for long high speed trips, which this car will never see.
If this is good i am ready to put the cover on as i have all new bearings and proper preload done.
From what i have read on a used set of gears the coast side will show MUCH more contact area and drive will be slightly toe. My pictures indicate this.
PRO's please chime in and help me correct anything that could be off, or tell me its good to go! Thanks in advance

those show a more widely better distributed load pattern than what I typically set up.If I got those kinds of patterns,I would go no further..006 is on the tight end but still in the acceptable range.I set tighter for manual and looser for auto.And just because the pattern looks good,that has nothing to do with noise.different gear cuts from different manufacturers produce varying different degrees of noise.You didn't state brand of 3.73s' you're installing.

Who is the manufacture of those gears? If they are AAM then leave the backlash at .006, the new 2 cut process has imperfections so as you break it in the backlash will open up to .008 over time.

This is a set of used GM brand gears.
They looked like new to me, i could hardly tell they were used.
Would .006 be better for the track with slicks BUT worse for the highway?, with .010 being better for the highway? This is not my DD. I dont drive this car on long trips or expressway speed for sustained amout of time if that helps. I just want the prolong its failure, due to super sticky tires, as long as possible.
I do plan on lots of 1.6-1.7 or lower, sixty foot times this year.

I replaced my used bearing on the pinoin with a new one and now changing only the bearing has thrown my pattern off. I had to change carrier shims to get proper backlash. With the new bearings my backlash was 0 when used with the above shims. So here are new pics of my pattern. I am going to pull off my newly pressed on pinion bearning and replace the shim behind it. How much smaller should i go?

It is possible that i didnt torque the bearing caps down all the way the first time, with the old bearing. I just gave em a light hit with the impact. Im going to use the old bearing again tonight and make sure to torque the caps down and see what happens.

DId you put the shim back on the pinion? And Did you make sure the part number on the new and old bearings matched? Changing a bearing will not change your depth or backlash unless you changed the shims too.

OK I have new pictures..... My carrier bearing caps must not have been torqued down for my first set of pictures. That explains alot of the previous conversation...
What i have now is .010 backlash with the following pattern. The pinion shim is the factory one but the carrier shims had to be changed much to achieve proper backlash.
What do you guys think? Im concerned with the abrupt cuttoff on the bottomm of drive and the shape of the coast side is large on heel and very narrow on the toe.
