Magnuson Supercharger
I'm new here and have a 99 SS with an 04 Z06 crate motor from GM. Everything is stock on it except the intake, headers, shifter, wires, clutch pressure plate flywheel and slave cylinder. I'm wanting to buy a magnuson supercharger but don't know if the LS1 F-Body version will work with the 7 or 8psi that it produces or if the 04 Z06 kit will bolt up. Thanks

Also how strong is the LS6 compared to the LS1. I know LS1's are supposed to be able to handle 500+ HP naturally aspirated. So shouldn't the LS6 be able to handle more since it puts out more power?

some may disagree...but just because the LS6 has more power output than the LS1 doesn't necessarily mean it can handle more power. It means that it is closer to the power level that it can handle. Alot of the LS6's power comes from the heads and cam, which really won't strengthen the motor...that's the job of the bottom end and valvetrain.

But why would GM produce the :S6 being closer the the 500HP range than the LS1? Don't sound right to me. Also it can safely handle 6600 or 6700 (which ever the rev limiter is set at) and the F- body LS1 only goes to 6 or 6200

Im gonna agree with TW86 on this one, i am 99% sure that the two motors have essntially the same rotating assembly, so power handling should be about the same, the only difference in the blocks i think is the lifter windows in the ls6, the added power comes from the cam and heads on the 6 you can get the same numbers putting those on an ls1, but i could be wrong

the difference in the blocks is the LS6 has "windows" between the mains to promote better oil passing, the LS1 is closed off in this area
some say the the passages may weakin the block, some say the better oil flow gives it a few more hp.
I would say they're equal

You can send him a PM; Ed @ Late Model Speed. Your stock bottom end and heads can handle 7psi, but I wouldn't run more than that for longevity. Ed will pretty much tell you the same thing. GIve him a pm or look up one of his posts, it will have his contact info in it, then explain what you have, what you want, how it will be driven, etc and he will get you set up correctly. His shop can do installs too.

the ls6 has the same power potential as the ls1, the ls6 has different heads and cam, if they were not the same then how could there be a ls6 conversion kit for the ls1 from gm performance.

and pistons are different. they have coated skirts on i think 02 and later. i believe to reduce friction and blow by. and yes i had it at the track but no traction so i ran a 13.3 spinning to the 1/8 at 109.9

link to the kit info
you have to put a spacer on the frame and trim the cowl.
not easy, but its worth it for the power
for all the important parts....your engine is the same as any LS1...you'll likely just make more power in the end with a better cam/head setup.

You can change the psi by changing the pulley size, they come with a pulley for 5psi, but if you want to run 7 let Ed know and he'll put it in the kit for you. When I put my kit on I talked to Ed a lot and he told me that the maggies like about 9-9.5:1 compression. I used thicker head gaskets, and heads that were machined out to 72cc to help drop the compression.

Z06's slap them on all day long without major issues. If it was me slap it on run 7-8 psi with it and have fun. Go over to the corvetteforum.com and look in thier F/I section for the C5's. The LS1 shortblock is actually stronger structurally then the LS6 shortblock. Most machined stroked or forged motors are mostly made with LS1 blocks, 6.0L iron blocks and its not because of the price difference between the two because its not much if any. This should only be a concern if you plan on stroking it or running over 10#'s of boost though. Otherwise with what you are wanting there is not much of a concern for strength. Besides as long as you have a good tuner you can have a reliable running maggie on a LS6 up to 8#'s IMO. Me personally I would have no problem going at it with 10#'s. I ran 10-12#'s on my C5 with a P1SC for more then 15K miles with not one issue. And there is no difference in the LS1 in my old C5's then my LS1 in my Camaro's.
