I'd consider the Formula like the base of the V8 Firebird. Both TA's and Formula's got the WS9 code but the W66 code is what gives the Formula the Formula/regular Firebird like appearence package. The TA got Y82 or Y87 or something code for the TA standard options & appearence. Things like T-Tops and Leather were only options on the Formula when they are standard on the TA. The Formula will have WS9 & W66 on the RPO Code list and the TA will have WS9 and it's appearence code what ever that code is. That's kind of how the title to some Trans Am's say Pontiac Firebird Formula Trans Am.

Formulas were not appearance packages, they were sleeper packages, the appearance of a base bird but with some oomph
Dash without the Flash (I just made that up)
Made for those who didnt need the body addons found on the big brother T/A but wanted the Go without the Show (okay I will stop now)

I'll use my old Quote
Formula; Everthing a Trans Am is without all the Fluff
Basically it has all the same mechanicals (Suspension Drivetrain Cooling system Exhaust Etc...) as a Trans Am in a Firebird Shell
BTW
WS9 + W66 = Formula
WS9 + Y82 = Trans Am

And this one loves to prey on unknowing mustang owners, the fluff just adds unneeded weight. Do like the ram-air hood though, which has it's code on the back....for anyone that wasn't keeping up.LOL

You could pretty much have a T/A, except for the ground effects, on 4th gens. If you had all the option packages that is. My 93 has quite a few options, but not the raised spoiler one. I have leather, 6 way adjustable seats, CD player, 10 speaker + amp, keyless entry and I'm sure a few others I can't think of.

anybody know what the weight difference is between a ta and formula?
when I bought my formula I had full intentions of turing it into a ta until I ran across the production numbers on here. Now Im proud to have a formula instead of a ta.

yea its nice to know that out of around 322 thousand fourth gen firebirds only 35 thousand were formulas. (give or take a few hundred or thousand )
Hell in terms of LS1's the number of T/A's to Formulas is almost 15 to 1!

The differences between T/A's and Formula's now day's really is that much.
4th gen's weigh about the same. Maybe a hundred pound difference due to the ground effect's under the door, bigger rear bumper, and "up-level" spoiler. The Formula was like the Camaro. "Most bang for the buck." I believe 1LE was only available on Formula's(4th gen's). 3rd gen Formula's came standard with the WS6 supension. 3rd gen Trans Am's had it as an option and again with all the ground effects.
70-81 Formula's and Trans Am's is where the biggest differences were. There was nearly a 350 pound difference between them. All the performance of a Trans Am for a cheaper price. My dad has a 70 Ram Air 3 T/A and I have a 71 455 Formula. Both 4 speed's, 12 bolts, and non-air. My Formula was 318 pounds lighter than the T/A. Hope this helps people understand differences between the 2.

Weight savings is minor - interior trim, P seats, T top.
I've had both Formula and TA, and loved them both, but Formula has the advantage of exclusivity. Although TA accomodates a variety of tastes, there's never any doubt about the mission of a Formula - speeding.
