Hot Cam kit worth it? please read
Ok heres the deal, I have my motor torn apart right now to fix a blown head gasket and i'm looking to do whatever i can within my budget to get the most power i can. I was looking into bumping up the compression slightly and puttin 1.6 rockers in, so i was lookin around today and a new set of rockers is normally about 250 or so, so i figure the Hot cam kit is around 550 new and i have seen kits goes used for around 300-400. I know everyone is going to say that the kit is very limiited and all that stuff, but my money is limited and i figure with the kit only a few hundred more that just rockers it can't hurt right? I would love to do an le2 set up but there is no way for me to afford that right now. So i see this as a perfect set-up for me, i know that the valve springs are not the best so if i ever go bigger on a cam i would change those out also.
I saw a corvette run 11.7's on lt1engine.com right now my stock internaled lt1 ran 13.08's i was planning on putting headers possibly slightly higher compression and possibly the Hot cam kit in, and of course a tune. Now do you think i could hit low low 12's or high 11's with that set up? I also want to do put 4.10's in but that wont be this winter.
What do you guys think? for another 200 or so bucks over just 1.6 rockers is it worth it? I dont care about HP #'s, i care about track times.
Let me know what you guys think

It looks like you don't mind used parts, so why not try to piece some of those together? You can get used roller rockers and a used cam and Crane Valve Springs (With retainers and locks) are under $180 new.
So for less than $500 you can build you own, much better kit.

I have either been thinkin about picking up either a used hot cam kit, or trying to peice together some stuff, but if it comes down to it i think i could get a used hot cam kit in the 350-400 range maybe even 300 or so. I think i would be able to hit low 12's with that and everything else planned this winter. I think the hot cam kit will satisfy me for this coming racing season and maybe i'd up the bar next year to the LE2 set-up.
Plans for this winter are Hot Cam Kit, Bump up the compression (11:1 or 11.5:1), Long tubes, O/R Y, !emissions, Tune, LCA's, Weight reduction, and anything else i can afford. I really think i could hit low 12's possibly high 11's with that list. My car seems to respond very well to modifications.
Looks like its rime to start saving all my cash lol.

sure do, stock 3.23 gear and manifolds, the manifold just came off this weekend though. All my friends say my car is a freak haha. That why i think i really can break into 11.9999's with the hot cam, and if i dont i'll throw in some 4.10's and i dont think i'll have a problem

So i just had a guy offer me a cc503 cheap and was wondering what results people are putting down with those? I saw it is a little bit smaller than the bigger cam avaliable in the LE2 set up so i would later down the road just have to get the LE2 heads. But i saw in the cam sticky that it is the biggest cam you want to run on a stock bottom end because of the 6200-6400 shift points for the best power ban. Is that going to kill my bottom end? its a 38k miles stock bottom end. I just want reliability but the cam sticky mentioning the cc503 being the biggest to run on stock bottom end has me a little tied up here.

The more and more i read its looking like i dont really want to go with the cc503, i think the hot cam is able to put down decent power within the rpm range i want to stay in. With the cc503 i would have to take the rpms up to about 6300 for the full power range and i have a feeling my stock 4l60e with over 100 track passes on it wouldn't like that too much. I think with the hot cam shifting at 6k or 6100 i think it would run preety good.
Thoughts?

I currently have a hotcam and let me tell you, although it is choking out my DART heads, it is awesome. When I had the stock heads on, I ran a 12.4 on a stock stall and bald street tires with a 2.3 60'. My buddy had a hotcam with ported heads (M6) and was managing high 11 second passes with some suspension and a radial. 1/8 mile times for him were in the 7's. With the right combo, that cam kicks ***! I say buy my Crane Gold rockers for $200 plus shipping and come with new crane polylock nuts and arp hardened 3/8 rocker studs and all you'll need is the cam and some misc. stuff and you're golden

1badzee, if you still got the rockers, polylock nuts, and rocker studs in about a month or so i will prolly pick em up off you. I always see just the hot cam's going for about 150 or so then i'd just need valve springs and pushrods correct?

Theoretically yes. You can pull it off with stock pushrods (I have for about 3 years). My buddy has a cc306 with stock pushrods and hes been going for about a year now with no issues. You will need springs, yes.

alright, what you mean theoretically? haha is there anything else i'm missing that is in the hot cam kit? Everyone says the valve springs in the kit suck, so what springs should i get if i do go with pieceing a kit together?
I figured out i would need your rockers and nuts, arp studs, the hot cam, whatever valve springs, and push rods. Anything else i'm missing? i've never peiced together a cam package...

valve spring retainers/locks.
I bought a hotcam kit new in box for 300 bucks off this very site.
Before the HC, my 93 with LTs and cai, auto/2.73's went 15.02 @93mph 2.6 60
after HC kit and a pcmforless chip it went 13.6 @ 104mph 2.1 60 (also had SFC's on this run)
I shift at 6100 rpms... With the 2.73's and no stall, I trap in 2nd gear at 6200rpms
3.73's will be here friday;]

I think i'll be able to hit high 11's with the cam, i already have a good sized stall that should go good with the mild hot cam (3200vig). I will also be getting it tuned by Shon at Herronperformance.com. Plus i was running that 13.08 on stock manifolds and stock 3.23 gears.
I really hope i can find a good deal on the kit like BigZee71 did. $300 is a steal and it was brand new! damn you haha. That and headers would be about 850, hopefully i can find something like that.
