I'm going to try and replace my heater core tomorrow, anything I should know or look out for before I start?

yup, do like I did and just cut the line that holds the 2 pipes together at the firewall. it is a bitch to get a socket on it and then you usually end up stripping the damn thing, saves you time when you replace it again after a few thousand miles otherwise it is easy as hell to do
