Should the cam for my 94 have a dowel in it?
Ok I got a custom grind from comp. It's an XFI lobed cam and I told them it was for my 94.
I do have a dynaspark but it still uses the splined drive mechanism on the cam gear.
Is the dowel I'm seeing for the water pump, and the cam gear that bolts onto my cam is what will have the splines?
Please tell me they didn't **** up.

the dowel is too long for ur appllication, u need to cut off a bit to clear ur '94opti (not sure but probably 3/4" is enough). the dowel goes into the cam sprocket, thats all. WP is drived by the cam sprocket gears which drives the WP gear

The dowel pin's length can be adjusted, don't worry
Can you get a vernier caliper? If yes, measure the length of the dowel pin in your OEM cam.
Lock the vernier with the knurled **** so you can use it to keep measuring as you adjust it.
How do you adjust it? It can be pushed in, using a mallet (please don't use a hammer) you can firmly tap it in (don't bang it). Keep measuring until your dowel's length has become the same length as the OEM.
If it won't go in far enough to reach the required length, then the pin is way too long. You will need to remove it and grind some of it at the end which goes into the cam, but just enough to keep it secure inside.

As I understand it, there are two different dowel pin lengths, depending on the year of the engine. On my 96 LT1, the dowel pin extends .625" (I measured it with a digital mic) and it indexes with the Opti.
Be very careful, if you leave the dowel pin extending too far, it'll kill the Opti.
