Default mini Starter needed to get around LT headers

What have you Guys used? I'm looking for a high torque gear reduction mini-starter that will clear my newly installed Quad-1 long tubes. I'm leaning towards this CSR unit.

Thanks

For my build to clear my LPPs, I used a ProTorque (now Jegs brand) mini gear-reduction starter, part number 555-10001. It's adjustable, required no shimming, and has no problem cranking over my 12.5:1 compression 383. Cost me about $140 - very nice!

Why wont the stock one work???

I like to use the K.I.S.S. principle. Give it good cables and the stocker will turn it just fine.

I use a stock starter with Focuztech 1 3/4" quads.

While the stock one can turn a higher compression motor, I doubt it can do it reliably for long.

Up till 170K miles on the car I was using the original L99 starter which was effectively the same as an 85 f-body 305 starter. No gear reduction, twice the weight of the LT1 starter. It turned over the heads/cam motor at 230psi cranking compression just fine. Only swapped it out because I broke the solenoid taking the wiring off.

Current setup has even more cranking compression and with the 0gauge wire the stock starter works fine.

People like to assume parts "need" to be replaced based on decades old wisdom. There was a time when a stock starter had a problem with a modified engine. These days, not so much.

RamAir95TA,

Thanks for your and everyone else's replies. This Jeg's starter was 2nd on my list, but you may have moved it up to the top.

The stock starter is fine Guys. Even for my 12 to 1 CR stroker. I just have it in a bad environment with these new stainless steel long tube headers. The stock starter solenoid is about 1/16" from an inner header long tube and is dying quickly. I do not want to dent this long tube for many reasons.

If I can get a mini starter to clear my headers that would be great.

This adjustable mini-starter from Jeg's may be the ticket. I was leaning towards the CSR unit because it looks like the smallest mini starter out there.

Thanks again

I have the CSR mini-starter that is a rebranded for Summit (part # 820323P)

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-820323P/?rtype=10

It has worked like a charm for years, and the fit and finish was perfect !

This was installed with the FLP 1 3/4" Long tubes
