Default MSD 6AL Question!!!

When I bought my 97 SS It came with an MSD 6AL already installed! That was great and all, but there was no manual, or instructions with it. I have NO IDEA how they hooked it up, what they wired it to, what it takes to install/remove it, and how it ACTUALLY works! I have tried to do research but am coming up empty handed so I wanted to see if anyone has experience!

The things I am considering are as follows:

I want 2-step. How does that hook up to the 6AL and what exactly do I need?

How do I uninstall it??? I am thinking about switching to a Mallory but what will it take to remove the 6AL and install the Mallory?

What the hell is the 6AL hooked up to normally so it operates?

What exactly does it do and how do I control the Rev Limiter inside the box???

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but it is the ONLY part of my engine that I did not install myself and it is the ONLY part I am clueless about so I need to learn so I can know what the next step will be lol! Thanks in advance!

Get a piggyback controller for it and tune that box from a laptop is my advice.

The 6AL will allow you to rev limit thru small white "piils". It is basically a ignition amplifier allowing more energy to the plugs and multiple sparks under ~3000rpm. You will still need a distributor to handle any type of timing curve or vacuum advance. if you got a 6AL2 or a piggyback box you could map your timing curve on the laptop.

No...

All you need to do is unplug it from the coil harness.. Hopefully someone wasnt retarded and spliced the wires. If they used the connector, you just unhook it. Or rather hook the Mallory box to it.

I would ditch the MSD. Kind of stupid to have 4 boxes doing what 1 box can do.

Marc, that is a MUCH newer version of what I have. That has dials to adjust rev limits and it looks slightly different. Mine is an older version of the 6AL which is why I cant find anything about it when I look around. I found that one, but not mine! I have soft touch rev control, but that is all I know.

I am going to ditch the MSD, but I want a 2-step temporarily until I get my nitrous.

When I get the nitrous I will get the mallory which is why I asked those questions HOWEVER, until I do that I just wanna get the 45.00 2-step box as a temporary thing...

There website doesn't list the older models, but I found this one.

http://static.summitracing.com/globa...0_frm28645.pdf

That should be closer to what you have then.

Look on the box and it should have the model # on it.

Just get the MSD digi6 and plug it into the MSD harness...if the guy was smart enough to put it...and hopefully he didn't splice the wires...
