Default Pulling Motor From the top WITH tranny attached.

So im pulling my motor out to swap the shortblocks.. I also am installing a new clutch.. So i figure may as well just pull them together.. Im gonna order the happy hooker in the next few days or see if i can find one used.. Has anyone with a 6spd done a writeup on it?

Ill go ahead and be the first to say it......if ur pulling the transmission too and you have the means to do it that way, you might as well go through the bottom. And before this gets out of hand, I actually prefer pulling the engine through the top.
Also, if you have searched for this way of pulling the engine and trans and came up short, its probably because most people just go through the bottom when tackling this. It was a big enough pain to get just the engine out the top, I'm not even sure its possible to pull the trans with it without some kind of pit under the car.
Just my $0.02 and MHO.

I pull from the top, the only way I know how. But I separate the transmission and drop it from the bottom. It probably can be done from the top pulling both but I'm sure its a major PITA and over working yourself.

Whenever you're pulling both it's ALWAYS better/easier/faster to drop it out the bottom. Of course you will get folks who will suggest pulling it out the top, but from my experience out the bottom is the only way to go.

I prefer pulling them together and always go out the top BUT, my car has a full frame in the way of going out the bottom. In a third gen out the top with tranny is fine, in a 4th gen that seems like really doing things the hard way.

You won't regret it. Be safe and take your time with it. After you do it once you'll be able to do it in half the time, if you ever have to do it again.

Took mine out the top just a few weeks ago, with 6 speed attached. Pretty easy, was out in about 3 hours (thats with starting with everything disconnected except trans and motor mounts. Easy. Had to pull the drivers side lower motor mount to get the motor out, the bellhousing hits. I had my intake and valve covers off.

I did mine out the top with the auto trans attached. It was a huge pain in the *** and I ended up smashing my heater box. Next time I will just take the time to pull the trans first, then take the engine out the top.

From the info gathered here, your best bet is out the bottom.

I took mine out the top with the m6 attached, no damage to anything but was a PITA. Not as big of a pita as some people make it seem though. Was not as bad as pulling the engine and Trans outta my stealth, now that's a PITA! I did however pull exhaust manifolds, intake and all accessories off and used a cherry picker and load leveler. Out the bottom does look easier I just didnt have the room to do it that way.

I did the last one from the top with a Happy Hooker because I didn't have air to get the K member busted loose. Next time I will have air and do it out the bottom. Only thing will be to make sure I have stands/ cribbing to set the unibody on so I can use the hoist to pick up the engine off the K member to get at the bottom side.
