Default LT1 SS intake

Just picked up an 96-97 SS hood for my brothers Z28...and was thinking about getting the factory SS intake as opposed to the K&N he has right now...would it be better to utilized the Factory SS intake with K&N filter? or run the K&N FIPK intake pn 57-3010-1..

The stock SS intake is considered to be the worst induction system for these cars due to its location and the number of bends in short succession in the system, not to mention the lack of accessibility under the hood with it installed. I would stick with the K&N CAI and leave the hood scoop open.

+1 for the K&N system. The bends in the SS intake can hurt performance as mentioned above, and because it sits on top of the intake manifold (at the highest point of the engine bay) heat soak is an issue as well.

The general consensus seems to be this:

LT1 SS intake <(or equal to) Stock air box < K&N CAI < LT1 WS6 Air box <(Or equal to) LS1 lid swap

I would stick with the intake you've got. Not only for the reasons listed but you will spend alot of money on the ss version.

I know Jim @ speed dyno tested this and the stock SS intake was as good as other cai's. Unless 500+ HP you won't see a difference between them.

^the reasoning behind a similar dyno run I bet would just be from the "open" big filter. I bet it does flow well, but it would start to hurt performance when it heated up. Hard to say for sure though.

Basically, even if the SS intake does show similar dyno numbers to a CAI, then it's a good reason not to spend the extra cash on the SS intake over a CAI, especially if you already have a regular CAI...

hmm..I would have thought differently since its a fully functional hood but the heat soak did make me think twice..maybe it has more value as a clone (tribute) part? since my brother has the wheels, spoiler, hood, stage 2 slp suspension (bilsteins) and SS floor mats. oh and I will be getting the SS Stock intake for dirt cheap..I mean DIRT cheap because the car was in an accident and were trying to salvage as much parts from it as possible..96 SS #976 I believe and the owner is a good friend that unfortunately doesn't know too much about the car...and I have a little knowledge but not enough to dive into the 93-97 years..or the LT1/LT4

Even if I wanted one, they are VERY hard to find in good condition.

If you can ****** it up for dirt cheap, do it. They are rare to find in good condition and usually pretty expensive. Honestly, I would just sell it though.

Not only is it horrible if you want any power gains, but it just looks awkward as hell sitting there.

I've had my 96 SS since 2002 and if you ask me I would say it looks awkward as hell not sittin in there I love it so much I bought 2 extras so I could modify it to work with my supercharger setup. I ran my last F.I. setup with cai and ss filter there was absolutely no difference in power, boost, or efficiency.

This will remain a daily driver and stop light warrior...boost is out of the question for now...if he plans it then oh well but we both have just gotten into the F-body scene...I've been in it since 02 and my brother just the past 3 years...we both came from import background so were trying to learn

I was just saying that there's no difference in performance between the two, if you decide to go with the ss intake a k&n filter does help but when you go to get one you'll have to have them cross reference the size from another brand because they dont carry one specifically for the ss intake. I'll see if I can get the k&n part number for you off of mine.

The hoodscoops on the LT1 cars are way too low to get any sort of ram air effect.

I am helping a friend with his 96 SS 383 build, what would it take to put the LS1 air box on it with the stock LT1 SS hood. I know the hood would just be left open but would we have to cut on the hood to clear the LS1 air box, cant do that....
