Default 383 oil leak

I just finished my 383 build and I have this really bad oil leak. It dumping out of the back of the engine. Turns out the rear main seal housing wasn't sealed on the oil pan. There was these strange 1/8 inch spacers holding it apart. I put factory gaskets on the car so I don't know why they were there. Any idea what's up with them? Should they be there?

those "1/8" spacers" could have been torn from the old oil pan gasket and stayed on the block. the holes in the pan gasket have metal inserts/washers in them and maybe one dislodged from the old gasket and stayed on. I saw this on a pan gasket swap and fortunately caught it but could have easily of missed it. On test fit pan just did not go flush...looked closer and just the small metal washer/spacer was stuck to block
