Default LS1 Lid Conversion....pics

Can someone please post pics of their conversion without the lid & filter on... if you're using an LS1 rad support.
I just tried throwing this on but something doesn't look right?

sorry i dont have without the lid or filter off. I assume your talking about how the base sits. You have to sand down the underneath bracing part of the base for it to sit correct on the LT1 crossmember.

Thanks for those....
I've never seen an LS1 setup so this is kind of new to me... Without the filter all I see is half of the core support and half of the bottom of the plastic tray. lol where's the air supposed to come through?

Did it over the winter before I left for San Diego



I wondered the same thing about the air. lol

I cut the plastic out with a dremel since I also bought that ram air metal scoop that goes down between the radiator where the plastic air dam is.

93-97 Camaros must cut support to fit this mod under stock hood and most available aftermarket hoods,93-97 firebirds do not because of the ramair hood however also must cut support if using stock fireturd hood.

This link was very helpfull thanks! Anyone doing this mod should also throw in the chris1313 while they are doing it...i would love the gains from doing both at the same time!!!

thats how mine is cut. the filter sits on top of the Rad and A/c condensor. The stock firebird hood was so close it just wedged it down, now that i have a ram air hood i may just buy a new ls1 base and try to make it look cleaner. a Jig saw to the stock rad support made cutting easy, alot easier then a dremel! A Ls1 base will make it look alot cleaner though. IT depends what car its going on for how much work will need done. Since mine was a stock trans am hood i had to do it this way to get as much room as possible. With a Ram air trans am, or a Camaro, im pretty sure the work needed is minimal and you can use a ls1 base which makes things alot easier.

Some people just cut the top and back section of the upper support out, this to me only lets half of the filter get air, the way i did it the whole filter can get as much air as possible and half of it doesnt sit on the metal that is left on the support.

Just curious, but is the cutting of that support absolutely necessary with a stock firebird hood? Could you instead cut and dremel the underside of the hood well enough to do this?

Thats my site Nate linked - its nothing to do with the front support, its everything to do with hood clearance. The only hoods you can fit it under (bolt on application) are TA ram air hoods and cowl hoods. All others, bust out the cutting wheel.

I'm assuming SLP Firehawk hoods fit under that category?

If its a flat hood it wont fit without cutting regardless of model/year LT1. A few cowl guys have to trim the base to get it to fit under the hood, then there is the lid. Some lids are short, while some are tall.

I did this swap with a stock hood and had to cut the hood bracing and rad support also did the chris1313 ram air as well. Picked up 2mph in the 1/4. I took some weight outta the car but not a whole lot so even if the weight factored into the speed a lil bit thats a solid increase for the money.

With the stock firebird hood You have to cut both. Its just that tight in there. I highly doubt you can get away with one or the other. And in my eyes its kind of pointless to use a Ls1 filter base because you would have to hack it so extremly thin that there would be nothing left of it lol. Mine is/was set up kind of ghetto with the hood wedging the lid onto the filter between the rad and a/c condensor. I cant see the filter sitting any higher and the hood closing. I think the outter skin of my hood after cutting even showed a small buldge when the hood was shut.

Just with judgement and the way an Ls1 lid is built vs a LT1 ram air intake...The ls1 lid looks shorter, comparing how high it comes off the throttle body. Its a tough comparison, and it doesnt look like any thing major. It does look shorter though.

I dont understand why your curious though, If you can fit the ram air set up, im sure you can fit the ls1 lid, since alot of people already have them under a Ram air hood
