with the 4.56 it was alright, just gotta really know how to shift and trust me you will get a lot of practice.
also... you can usually start out in 3rd gear for normal driving. but, keep in mind that the steeper the gear the weaker the rear will essentially become. With that said, don't use a sticky tire unless you have a stronger rear.

Have 3.73s in my 12 bolt rear,bolt ons only motor...they were awseome with stock wheels and tires but wit a 28" tall tire in the back it would make it nice with some 3.90s or 4.10s!!

4.10s are the most common for M6 cars, but that includes all of the legit DDers out there. If it is only a weekend toy (like your post sounds like it will be), I would actually suggest a 4.30 or 4.56 (with an upgraded rear end!).
