Spraying a high mileage LT1
Hey guys, I'm planning on spraying my 141k mile bolt on LT1 (runs 12.93 on motor) this coming spring. Most likely gonna be a 100-150 shot through a single nozzle wet kit. Gonna have all of the saftey things done (timing retard, wot switch, window switch, heater, purge, etc.). Anybody with experience, how has your stock LT1 held up to the nitrous abbuse? Also any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Its really a craps shoot, my advice would be if you do spray, do so under the premise that the motor is gonna grenade sooner than later and be happy if it lasts.
That being said, I sprayed 100hp on my stock long block with about 90k till 120k when I did heads and cam and never had a problem, but I only put maybe 20 bottles through it. I then ring and bearinged the same motor, sprayed 150 with heads/cam and it beat the intake valve seat out and broke a piston after only 5 or 6 bottles. It had about 140k when it popped.

I'm echoing what Clovis just said. The real answer is "a zero horsepower shot." It'll pop, you just don't know when. The better question is "do you have the money for a rebuild if it does?"

If you never go lean, you keep the timing conservative, and you bring the shot in with the window switch at or above 2500 with the 100 shot or 3000 with the 150, it's easier on your motor than a heads/cam package spinning in the mid six's.
Your fuel system is your highest priority!!!!
Start with baby shots (50) and inch your way up (25 at a time), looking at plugs (a front and a rear cylinder) every time you change something.
If you have any datalogging capability, watch the O2 sensors. If stock sensors fall below mid 800's, that's a warning you're not giving it enough fuel. Mine always showed high 800's to 900 on the spray. I know they're not accurate at those AFR's, but better than just closing your eyes to it.

Do you have a break down of the slip? Thats a great time! Are you locking out 1st gear? Most 6spd guys I have talked to have said locking out 1st gear is a smart move.

IA buddy of mine sprayed his stock/bolt on Impala SS w/ the cast iron heads for about 3 years before it grenaded. He did a 50 shot on the street and went up to 100 when he wanted to really race. His car was daily driven all season with about 110k miles when he started spraying it.
As long as you upgrade the fuel pump, get the proper plugs and injectors, the right tune, and have all the safety mods to go along with it you should be okay for occasional spray. Just don't be surprised if it does blow up on you, you're kind of walking the razors edge every time you do it.

I launch as hard as possible on the motor then hit button and it stays on with a death grip!!!!!! Yes that means through the shifts and all, drive it like you stole it!!!! I also do not recommended spraying through the gears unless you have some stick-shift seat time.......

Yes I have all the bolt-ons minus the EWP, gear banging attitude!!!
LT headers
2.5"X-pipe w/10series flowmasters
1.6 rockers,7/16 upgrade
SLP lid
NX 150shot,single shark nozzle
Madtuner tune
4.10s stock 10-bolt (exploded) 8.8 w/ 3.73s on the bench.
Beginning new mods after the new year as soon as I decide $for$ what will yield the most power

chevy highperformance magizine did an article on a high mileage motor that took up to a 275 shot before it blew up and i believe that was becasue of a head gasket, they put a timimg chain and that was it i believe andthey did increments with the testing and they said that the motor being so well used that the more n2o they ran threw it the better it ran on there engine dyno.
probably because it was helping to seal up the motor up better as it got hotter.
well if you read the article you will see there is more truch then what my post says.
SORRY
ok i found the article.

Thanks for your input guys. I have been looking around the the harris speed works wet kit has really caught my eye. for $375 with no bottle (already have a 10lb NOS bottle) it seems to be a great deal...
