running on like 3 cylinders?
Hi all,
Car was due for a tune up after the fuel pump was replaced so I figured I'd start with the plugs and wires. I replaced all plugs with TR55s gapped at 0.050 and some no name wires. Go to start the car and it sputters and runs like complete ****. running at maybe 500rpm per the tach and feels like about 4 cylinders are working. I shut it off, and figure something was wrong with the new plugs...put all the old ones back in and still does it. Go back to old wires and still not running.
I figure I have a bigger problem and start throwin on some excess parts I have lying around. ICM replaced with a used unit and still the same symptoms (maybe worse? took some gas to get started)
Threw on a brand new optispark I had lying in a box as well as replaced the wiring harness to the optispark -- same problems persist.
Not sure what else to check...any ideas would be great. I know the best method isnt to just throw parts at it but I had them lying around so I figured what the hell. Only ignition component I haven't touched is the coil (I dont have an extra around anywhere) -- could the coil be the culprit?
Thanks for reading any ideas would be appreciated

The car ran fine after the pump install, however I have checked the wiring numerous times (seems the most likely thing to screw up) and they've all been going to the right cylinder. I will check again but I am almost certain they are all going to the right place.

It's either ignition or fuel. If you believe the ignition is fine then the next thing to do is start looking at your just replaced fuel pump. Get yourself a pressure gauge at any parts store and check fuel pressure.

After replacing the coil and nothing happening I finally came to the conclusion that it was water in the fuel. After adding a bottle of HEET and running for about 5 minutes car started to run fine again. Not sure how the water got in or anything but seems to have been the culprit. However one question, while the car runs fine now (just took it on a 50 mile trip no hiccups) it still has a little bit of a hard time starting. after maybe 30 seconds it starts to idle fine but the first 30 seconds its definitely not running 100%. any ideas?
