Default What rear end?

I've been off of the site for a little while, been working 70 hours a week with a new promotion, also just earned a $2000 bonus, so now its time to finish the firebird and have some fun!

With my AI 200cc setup, I'll need more than a 10 bolt, what is the best cost efficient rear end for a street/drag racing car that will never been a 9 second car but hopefully a consistent 10 second car in the future? Thanks for the help.

A 12 bolt is a good choice, they are strong enough for your setup. You can order them with bearing retainer housing ends (like the 9-inch) so you eliminate the c-clips. The c-clips are the weak point of both the 12 bolt and the 10 bolt.

The other option is the S-60 but it is heavier than the 12 bolt and strength wize would be over kill for your setup.

Many people choose the 9 Inch. For most people it's not needed. The main reason for choosing the 9 inch is so you can swap gears easily. The 9 inch actually has a higher parasitic power loss than either the 12 bolt or s-60.

There are several sponsors here on LS1Tech that could give you guidance.

Good luck.

I priced out the 12 bolt, 9 inch and S60. The Strange S60 is the least expensive by a couple hundred dollars. In Strange's advertising they recommend the S60 over the 12 bolt. I bought my S60 from Carl at CRP Racing, he has a sale going in the 'rear end' section. FWIW Carl doesn't sell 12 bolts for torque arm cars because of noise issues after hard launches. Bob at BruteSpeed don't like 'em either. Don't kill the messenger.

I don't have enough experience with the 12 bolt torque arm applications to comment on the noise issue, however if it is properly setup there shouldn't be a noise issue.

I can understand Strange suggesting the S-60 over the 12 bolt. The S-60 is a stronger rear than the 12 bolt or 9 inch. If it costs less than the 12 bolt then that would be a no brainer, go s-60.

Just for your information the s-60 is basicly a Dana 60. These are the rear that Mopar put behind the Hemi's in the 60's & 70's. Very strong & durable.

Good luck.

My car is stick and I plan on making a pretty large amount of power in the future so the 12 bolt was wrong for me. It seems like the reason they whine after some hard launching with a M6 is because the pinion gear isn't supported as well and takes a beating.

That left the 9" and the S60. I went with the 9" and built my own 3rd member because I wanted something more versatile being that the car is going to be used for a lot of different things. I needed something strong enough for drag with a T56, lighter for road racing (limiting unsprung weight is VERY important), and useable on the street (although, the 9" is going to be a little louder than the S60). I'm sure the S60 is a great rear but having the ability to swap out the whole 9" center is awesome. If I ever want to go in a different direction I won't have to rip my rear out of the car and have it out of commission for long. I can just build another third member in my basement and do a quick change.

I wanted You to receive some feedback from other members before posting in an effort to not be over bearing. The S60 is the most economically priced bolt in high performance rear for the fbody. Ironically it is well known as the quietest and the strongest. Its drawbacks by comparison are its 20-25 lbs heavier than a 12-bolt and fewer choices of available gear ratios.

Gear changes are much easier than the original Dana 60 due to its spanner nuts for carrier adjustments requiring no shims and no more need for a case spreader.

The S60 comes standard with 35-spline axles and a very stout Trutrac or Strac clutchless posi unit.

The Dana 60 is only rumored to be a Mopar rear, it was used in many Chevrolet and GMC pickups over the years and is well known for its durability.

Hope this helps,
Carl

Quick Performance 9" here in my daily, 64 mile round trip. Best price I found when I was looking between 12 bolt s 60 or 9".

Any noise or anything that annoys you during that drive? My drive currently is that long also, I also go over two mountains so it makes it funnnnn.

The first 1000 miles or so the gears where noisy. I have a big ol 24" turbo muffler so it's fairly quiet for what it is. Now that I have about 25k on it it's as quiet as can be. Been to the track a few times with slicks and beat the hell outta it on a daily basis and I haven't had no issues with it.

Do you know how much the S60 weighs over factory 10 bolt? What are your thoughts on Moser?

The only weight comparison I have is from Strange Eng, they say the S60 is 20-25 lbs heavier than a 12-bolt.
