Default Removing PCV Valve Made Car Die??????

Just now, I removed the PCV valve from the intake. While the other end of the PCV valve was still connected to the horse shoe shaped hose, it didn't really seem to affect idle much. Then, i removed the PCV valve from the horse shoe shaped hose and the car started to idle pretty rough. After about a minute, the car died... I put the everything back like it was and the car ran exactly as before. Any ideas what caused this

I thought it was a noob question lol I knew that it would create a vacuum leak, but i was just kinda concerned that the car died. Is that normal?
