Default Oil Pan Question

Hey guys I have gone through and read about most of the oil pans, and I am getting a LOT of mixed reviews from which one to pick. I have been thinking about the Canton 15-242T; yet i have heard about windage tray issues. I am looking to replace the oil pump/pick up etc. What do you guys suggest for me to get? The car is essentially bolt ons/geared/stalled/150 shot so nothing too crazy. The reason why I am wanting to replace these parts is because the motor is coming out of the car for new gaskets, and longtube install as well as a few other touch up pieces.

Karl Ellwein told me that I'd be better off removing the Canton tray and reusing the stock piece in my 244t (nearly identical to the 242t on the inside). I'll also be running a baffle on the rear main cap.

So essentially the pan itself is decent, however swapping of the windage tray is a necessity.

Not necessarily, some have the 242t with built in tray and no pressure drop at WOT. However, there seem to be less problems with the stock tray and I trust Karl.

There are a lot of factors that can cause problems... stroke, rod side clearance, oil type/viscosity, pump relief, etc.

It's not the end of the world if windage happens with the Canton pan. Easiest fix is to put less oil in. The 242-T is a 6 quart pan. I had this problem with my 396. Put in 5.5 quarts and it was fine.

Would you reccomend the Canton 242T?

I only did it because there was no need to modify the oil pan for a stroker crank. I would not recommend it unless you are going to road race/auto-x or are still using the stock crank. JMHO.

I would stick to the stock one IMO for a stock LT1. If you still insist on swapping it out or are going stroker soon, consider stepping up to the Moroso 7qt pan for SBC so you add some oil capacity and lower oil temps.

This, The way the trap doors are setup in the pan are desighend for a side to side motion(autoX) and hot a back and forth motion(drag racing). I bought one used years ago and cut most of the doors and windage tray out and started over. IMO Id also reather have a pan that held more oil than the canton.

When I started modding my Z28 faster, I started having this issue....watch the oil gauge between 3000 and 5000.

I solved the problem with a Moroso 20185 pan and Canton 20-013 pickup. Here are the results.

Now, I'm not sure if the pan, the pickup, or the combo of the two fixed the issue. I think the pickup did more for the problem than the pan as it centers the pickup in the pan much better than the stock pickup.

This pan has a built in windage tray, so i had to remove the stock windage tray and bolts. Then buy a few stock main cap bolts to replace the windage tray bolts.

This pan does not fit as good as the stock pan. I have had to apply sealant(The Right Stuff) to two of the bolt holes on this pan as they were drilled so close to the inside edge of the pan that they leak oil. I've also had some trouble with the back edge of the pan leaking too.

Opinions over the years that I have seen suggest that the Moroso pan fits better than the Canton pan.

At some point, I'm going to put the stock pan back on with the Canton pickup and see how it does.

Also, if you get long tubes, you may not be able to use the low oil sensor. They may be too close to the pan. I bought a Canton oil level sensor plug to plug the hole.

In this case, you'll need to short the low oil plug to keep the light off, wrap it it in electrical tape, then zip tie it in a safe place.
