Default Idling question for those with big cams

I've never had a crazy cammed car, or been around any really that have. I was running my car at idle yesterday to try and track down an oil leak with the UV dye. While I was letting it idle to get the oil flowing around, it would jump between 600-900rpm. It would sound strong for sec, then kinda hesitate, and jump back to normal stuff. The cam specs are .254/.268 @ .050 and .622/.638 with 112 LSA. Does this sound like it's normal at all, or is there something I need to take a look at?

The gas in the tank has been there for a long time, so i'm thinking the fuel filter needs to be changed out after it's gone through 1/4 of a tank or so now. Is there anything else that might be a problem, or is this normal for the crazy cams?

what is your idle set at?

Idling with big cams is usually a tuning issue.

I would try turning the idle up....mine is set for 950. It hangs around 950 to 1000.

Sounds like a tune problem, I'm running a monster custom Alan Futral grind solid roller 263\270-108+4 .708"\.689" and I idle @1000rpm with no issues. Now when I first crank her up it's cold so it will idle around 400rpm so I baby it with my foot to warm up to hold 1000.

Chief I'm waiting on slicks to get here from Summit then to the dyno for tuning and track afterwards. We were making 500 n/a rwhp with the OLD CamMotion cam (SR 254/261 @.050, .686/.685 on 110lsa) & I ran 11.123 1/4. We expect to hit somewhere in the 530+ area with the NEW Alan Futrual/Cam Motion grind & good tuning while shooting for mid 10's n/a.

Thanks guys, and it seems to idle around 7-800rpm when it's cold, and giving it a little gas to keep it running good so the idle doesn't jump too low. I've had some days it will idle steady around 800rpm, and others where it'll kinda jump around. This was just one of those day were it was jumpin a little bit. I need to get the clutch bled and working, then the oil leak taken care of, and then i'll be able to drive it around and tell for sure if there's a bigger problem. The tune is the first from pcmforless, so I do need to get it driving for data logs and getting the tune tweaked.
