I finally got around to getting a 160º from our local race shop for $4 less than what the parts stores sell just a stock temp. HOWEVER We have a bit of a problem here... I decided to boil it to make sure it is a 160º, even though I doubted it being one. The guy checked the book and the JET book says that this P# is 160, but I found it odd they'd make the P# 10174. Well I stuck in a digital thermometer into my pot of water and let it get up to temp WITH the TStat in it, not letting the probe touch any metal (even though the TStat was). It gets up to 160º and it hasn't even cracked open slightly yet. 180º comes and goes and about 185º it starts to open and by 205º it's fully open.... I did it twice, first time with an old 80's analog meat thermometer, and I questioned it's readings, since it showed the same :\
Shouldn't a 160º be fully open by about 175-180º!?
Looks like I'll be cutting some of the spring off -_- What a joke. Good thing I didn't put it in the car yet.
Thats all they carry. I specifically brought up the part number with him too. Jet doesn't even make a 160. Little **** sucker just wanted to make the sale -_-

Then take it back and get a refund and get your tstat elsewhere

$13 < $17. Any 160 is more than that anyways. If it wasn't such a drive there, I would and make them order in a 160º for that price. Who knows, I may still.

it doesn't make a big difference anyway, you'll notice on a good hot day sitting in traffic you'll be running up around the normal temp it was before the stat, but it is a free mod basically so we all do it. I couldn't find a 160 so used a 170 and drilled two 1/8" holes, works fine and I run 170 pass after pass mid summer at the track....along with a big radiator and elec pump though.
I assume you're tuned for 160? I run 195-210 with the stock tstat, I just am sick of my fans running all the time. I tuned for 160, so I figured I'd RUN a 160.

You should definitely get a 160, running the fans all the time ain't good for them, but I don't think attempting to modify a 180 degree tstat is a good way to accomplish that.
That's why I wanted a one, as to not have my fan/s running so much. We just drilled 4 holes in the top and if it still doesn't run cool, then I'll shell out more for a proper one. I'll order it from Autozone.

Good idea, just order it. As for not being a good idea to drill, it doesn't hurt anything some folks have never heard of some of these old school tricks, no biggie. You will notice with the 160 stat and even tuning for fans to kick on at 160 that on a good hot day with these tiny radiators it'll still run up around the normal 210 temp, that will not change until you go to a good dual 1" core radiator.

Apparently that's the trick my friend (who has the other LT1 in my story here) used to do that trick with his 70 Dodge Dart I wasn't aware heh. We drilled 4 small holes, and if that's too much, oh well. A reason to buy a REAL 160 then.
