I'm guessing you lose b/c that's pretty much the worst situation for that car you could possibly choose to race in. You're likely starting from the bottom of 2nd gear which is a huge dead spot on autos with stock stall.

If they give an excuse like they spin their tires, tell them it's not your fault they can't drive. And no, don't live it in D, because D is really OD. Also, you might just have the 2.73s instead of the 3.23s, which would cause some acceleration problems.
And you're more than welcome to have my stock hood for your ram air lol

If you don't have money to make a car faster, you can easily drop a little weight just by removing some stuff. The spare tire and jack aren't a bad place to start, also the back seat isn't too bad either. If you haven't already done it, the TB Bypass takes all of 10 minutes to do, and it'll keep the Throttle Body a little cooler so you can get a little more peak power.
If you haven't done it, check this out:

And also do a search, you'll find more than enough information on it.
Also look into doing a simple tune-up on the car. Plugs, wires, O2 sensors, Fuel Filter, Fluids. You'd be shocked at how well the car performs when all of the maintenance is up to date. Assuming you're younger (and broke.. hey I feel your pain), have the parentals pay for it. Tell them its so your car can keep running properly so you can get to school and work. It worked for me quite a bit
When you're racing, you can still stall the factory transmission a little bit. Hold the brake and the gas and get it up to about 1500-ish RPMs and hold it until the hands go down to go. Lay into it. A lot of the time it just takes seat time and practice to really get the feel for things.
Now with all of that aside, I'd also suggest taking it to the track. The ends rarely justify the means, and the controlled environment of a track will give you a lot more of a chance to practice improving your driving/launching skill than worrying about whether the idiot next to you will run you off the road, or if cops will come, etc. etc. etc.

but i did a good dig once and spinned but let off the gas and then gave it more and i hooked well and i got him about 3 car lengths. we would be head to head for a few seconds and then he would ripe away about 1-2 car lengths.
