Default Gears question

Anyone know how about how much it costs to have gears done? I currently have 2.73 and want to go 3.42 or 3.73, just not sure the approximate cost to having it installed.

My 3.73 gears ran me $489 installed. I had 3.23 before so I dont know if you will need a new carrier or not.

You have to buy series 2 carrier gears. It should be in the neighborhood of 400-500 bucks. I never have done mine, but I know several people who have had theirs done.

Yea, you'll need specific gears, or you can switch to a series 3 (would be more expensive since you have to buy the carrier, junkyard would work).

Make sure you have posi too, before you do all this. Might be better then to get a series 3 so you can get posi.

I had mine done FormulaZ in my 96 Formula Automatic 4 speed. Is yours an auto first off? If it is, I would go with the 3:73's if I were you. You would get the most difference out of those. I bought my gears online at a place called new era performance parts (www.neweraperformanceparts.com) for 160 bucks and then you need the install kit too, which was another 70 bucks too. They were running a special then, so I am not sure if the prices are up now or not. I then knew a guy who did my install for 100 bucks even, so in the end it cost me about 330 bucks, not too bad I thought.

I just checked new era FormulaZ and they are still running the same price as when I bought them, 160 and 70 bucks, for the the ring and pinion and the install kit. I bought the Motive Gears brand, so thats what I am telling you about.

Well less than I expected so not too bad. Just seems like the fun part is finding someone good to do the work (have not gone to a random shop in a while). Thank again for the info.

I recently called around and the cheapest price I found (for LABOR ONLY) was $250.

After searching here and CraigsList I found someone to do the install (labor only) for $150.

So look around, you can find a deal somewhere.

Don't waste money. If you want to go to 3.42's just get a whole rear out of a junk yard. It should run you between $300 and $450 depending on the mileage. This is something you should be able to do yourself. If you ever decide to step up to 3.73's you will already have the 3 series carrier. I got mine from a 2000 z28 6speed car. I also got the better brakes out of the deal. Well worth the money.
