You can buy a new front plate. This will allow you to use the T10 or muncie type bellhousing. You use a LS1 input shaft. The bad news is the transmission has to be completely torn down to change it. http://www.thegearbox.org/i//adapter_t56_3.jpg

The transmission doesn't have to be "completely" torn down to replace the front plate. Unless the guy is incompetent, he can likely do it in his living room.
Another option is the bellhousing available from Weir Hot Rod Products.

Thanks for the info! I'll just shop around for an LT1 T56!
(Just to get it straight, an LT1 T56 is the same thing as the LS1, except for the bellhousing, input shaft and mid-plate, like 1BADAIR said, right?)

1999 LS1 F Body T56 in my '82 Z28 using a Lakewood scattershield,McLeod adapter plate and extended pilot bushing. All bellhousing forward clutch components are stock for the '82, albeit aftermarket replacements.Lakewood bell,Lakewood adjustable ball stud,Lakewood HD clutch fork, Centerforce DF clutch, Hays steel flywheel, and ARP bolts throughout.I then made my own spherical rod end clutch linkage pushrods (years ago) , and reinforced the z bar (gussets).
Bell back I have the McLeod adapter plate, then the '99 T56 with a Pro 5.0.
I built my own crossmember from scratch to leave ample room for the head pipes (of the y pipe) to better "tuck" under the car off of the Hooker 2210 LT's.
This was my swap from the factory Borg Warner Super T10 my car came with.
I have the added driveability the T56 offers, and even if I pop a clutch it will only run me around $250-300 to replace

here's a similar thread.. I thought there was some useful info in there.
My dad and I are planning on doing this, but still haven't gotten to it.

the 93 does use different gears and are rated to 400 hp instead of 450 like the 94-02 trannys. the gear ratio in the 93 with 3:42 rear end is equivilent to a 94+ with 4:10 = worse gas mileage but more feelable torque

Vicinity, I have a LT1 T-56 that I need to part with. I bought it to put behind a 454 and recently purchased and LS1. I have the lt1 clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and all hydraulics. I would take 1000 + shipping for it all. If interested fell free to call. (918) 348-8541
