Drivetrain Vibration
Just drove my 47k mile 01 Formula Hawk w/ a T56 home from work and on the ride i noticed a vibration in the drive line. Starts at about 2400 rpm and gets quite noticable at 3000 rpm (havent taken it higher since). Its mostly noticably on acceleration. Inital though was the rear but its stock and "some" of the noise seams to come fom the back of the trans. Next thought is trans mount but i would think there would be vibration at the shifter but none more than usual(engine vib). I havent had a chance to get under it. Should i have it towed to a shop or limp it to work (9 miles mostly highway), where i can put it up on jack stands and take a look under her. i'd rather not add to the damage.

Odd Side Note
I bought the car in 05/09 and when i got her it already had a "skip shift eliminator". But on the ride home i clearly could not shift to 2nd if the "skip shift" light was on. Obviously this adds to my confusion.

Turns out the bar that runs parrallel to the drive shaft broke back at the rear. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this and is there a stronger replacement?

A lot of the time the torque arm breaks because the mounting bolts on the rear end worked loose. You don’t have a moser 12-bolt by chance do you? Sometimes this damages the gears in the tail shaft of the transmission. A lot of company’s offer aftermarket torque arms that relocate the front mount from the transmission to the chassis. Check BMR, UMI, ect……they offer several upgraded torque arms.

The rear is stock for now. I have 410's going in as soon as I get my camaro sold. When I bought the car I paid for a service contract. Is there any trick to get them to pay for an aftermarket part or would it have to be stock? A stocker should be covered but as I like to say "break it, upgrade it!"

Ordered a UMI Tunnel Brace mounted Torque Arm from WS6Store (2200)hoping to get it installed this week. Anything i should keep in mind when installing it? It seems pretty straight forward.

Done and done
Got the T/A installed with almost no problem. Had a small vibration starting a 2000 rpm up to almost 3000 rpm. Quick tweak to the pinion angle and no more vibrations! It's good to have my car back on the road. For those who care hear is a pic of the broken T/A. The broken part is actually the top(pic is upside down)

Glad to hear that you’re back on the road! I'll probably pick up a tunnel mount torque arm soon. How loud is the vibration / road noise? Did all the noise totally disappear after you adjusted the pinion angle?

The noise reminded me of driving over rumble strips just not quite to that extreme. After installing the new torque arm most of the noise went away but there was a feel almost like there was gravel in the drivetrain whenever accelerating. If that makes any sense. Ive had the exhaust uncorked but the tweak seemed to get the job done. ill cork it up tonight to be sure, although now im hypersensitive to creek, clunk, and vibration. Gotta love that GM feeling!

Noise came back, turned out to be the exhaust banging against the tunnel brace. loosened and adjusted the exhaust to get just enough clearance and no more noise!
