Default t56 main shaft question

I was looking at the different transmission sponsors here and I see that Texas Drivetrain Performance are the only ones that offer a 31 spline as a upgrade over the viper shaft. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Why are no other shops doing the 31 spline main shaft?

IMO, its half dozen in one hand and 6 in the other. I use the Viper shaft because its what I've always used and stocked. As I have said in the past, I personally do not believe there is any real measurable difference between the two. One uses a Ford yoke and the other uses a Dodge yoke.

But you know what they say about opinions so take it for what its worth I suppose.

Jason explained his thoughts here:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...nversions.html

FWIW, I also updated the 32-spline write-up with new tremec p/n's that drop the 3pc syncro lock down from GM's $200, to $30..

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but are not the Ford mainshaft 5th/6th separate and thus re-gearable separately (vs. the GM application combo 5th/6th gear)

03-04 Cobra only. They are using the mainshaft from the after market Ford unit which uses a one piece 5-6 cluster.

To the OP, I think the reason that no one else uses the 31-sp shaft is that it's not a direct fit, as it has to be machined in order to work in the f-body trans. The Viper shaft is a direct "bolt in"....just has to be shortened by 1 3/8in.

Yes, that's true. I got some bad news yesterday, though. The 31-sp shaft that I've been using very well may be discontinued Just a rumor, so we'll see.

The good news is that I ran across another machine shop that can produce any shaft from scratch Maybe... 32-splines for all! Just not sure on the pricing yet, as it may be much more expensive.

We use Viper 30 spline shafts because they are stong enough to take every bit of abuse you can throw at a T56 and there is no need for extra machining. Just machine the excess length off the shaft and get the customer back to bangin gears

Same reason we use them, I can promise you guys, you will rip the teeth off the input and cluster gear before breaking the 30 spline Viper shaft. Anything stronger is really just for bragging rights I guess.

What does the extra machining add to the price and do you think its worth it? Also if they are willing to make the 32 spline from scratch why not do 300M or is that over kill. I will be making around 700fwhp so I want to make sure all is well.

And just to be clear, the 32-spline upgrade is about a stronger triple/double cone synchro upgraded T56, not bragging rights. The 30/31-spline shafts work with the older double/single synchros that came in the F-body. The only triple/double 30-spline I'm aware of is the $600 aftermarket 9310 mainshaft.

bringing this one back a bit, but what kind of modifications would need to be made to make one of these fit into an LT series car?

I think you'd need to have Jason shorten a late model input shaft to LT1 length, that's it.
