Default drive pin

the mechanic found my grinding in first problem:broken drive pin. one of the two pins thatscrew into the top of the t56. what would cause this?am i shifting this wrong? i was yanking from first to second hard with a sloppy wore out shifter. i can't afford 3 hundred a pop for an eight dollar bolt! what type of pullers and such do i need to do this myself? i have the teardown manual, and i can read.i just need some locations to by equipment besides dealer. thanks folks....
