Default Shifter **** install gone wrong!

I was installing my Hurst Sidewinder w/button on a stock SS Hurst shifter. As I was tightening it, I wanted to make sure I got it really tight and lined up the shift pattern diagram on the shifter. Well, it got really hard to turn, ( I think maybe the threads are tapered?), then the whole shifter shaft started turning with the ****. Did I break the shaft? I have to get the **** off to get the console out and see what is going on, but I have been unable to do so. Anyone else had this problem?

you should be able to just lift up on the shifter boot and see what is going on. Prolly just need to tighten up the bolts. But it depends which shifter you have.

If it is the stock shifter handle you probably broke the rod loose where it fits inside the rubber isolator on the shifter handle. It will eventually come out of the rubber.

I should be able to remove the shifter, get it lined up straight, then weld it solid, right?

Yes. Pull the console parts, two bolts holding the stick to the shifter base and you can pull it.

It's either weld it, or spend 200 buck on a good aftermarket mgw shifter. I think I'll weld for now! Thanks.
