Rebuilding a Faceplated T56
Has anyone here done one? I am wondering if there are any major differences to look out for? I am having problems with mine going into 5th and 6th gear. It was working perfectly and then all of a sudden it started grinding into 5th and 6th. I am going to check the clutch first, but it seems to be disengaging, it obviously goes into 1st thru 4th no problems since there are no synchros to deal with. It also has no issues going into reverse.
If anyone has any ideas feel free to toss them by me!

Yea I understand they are still syncronized, I was just wondering if there was anything else that might be different when I tore it down. I haven't been speed shifting it at all, it just randomly went from shifting fine to not going in as I was driving home last fall. I parked it and havent looked at it since.

I put 18,000 street driven miles on mine when I had it. 4th gear plate had a little rounding so I had Liberty replace it even though they said it really wasnt bad. I had speed shifted to 3rd and hit 5th instead. It ground all the teeth on the gear and slider instantly. Wound up replacing the 5/6 cluster gear as well since it was loose on the shaft. In general, the faceplated part was pretty much in great shape and could have gone another 18k without being touched. I was planning on fixing and selling mine so I bought everything questionable because I didnt want any negative feedback. In hindsight, I'd have been better off selling it as is.

Dave, what was the ball park cost to have them fix it? I am looking at just getting synchronized t56, but the cheapest I can find them is in the 2-2500 range for a bone stock unit. I am starting to think I just send it to them and get it fixed at this point.

I sent the input shaft in to have a new plate welded on by Liberty. If I remember correctly, it was about $150. Everything else, I did myself. The cluster gear was about $230, 5th and 6th were about $120 ea. The synchro assembly for 5/6 was about $150. I bought mostly through ebay. I'd bet if I sent it off to have it all done, I'd have paid about $1500.
