Compilation of specific tools needed for T56 rebuild
Getting ready to tear into it, so aside from basic hand tools, I want to get a list of all the specific tools needed for the job
1. Pullers
What specific kind/size should I be looking for?
2. Press
How big of a press do I need? 12 ton, 20 ton? How many items will I need to actually press back on? 2-3 or more?
3. Snap ring pliers
What kind and from where? Autozone, Harbor Freight? What about the snap rings on the 5-6, I heard that was a biach, any specific tool for that one or just use the same pair on everything?
Anything else I'm missing? The LS2.com writeup is excellent, but I'm in a grey area when it comes to re-assembly. Does everything that gets "pulled" off just get "pressed" back on I take it???
Thanks!

1. You can make an 18" puller pretty much, it seems, from a 3 jaw puller granted its got a large enough diameter. I used the one they sell at Sears (craftsman). Costs about $40-50. But you can probably buy the cheap ones at Harbor freight. I bought a set of 3, 3 jaw gear pullers all of different sizes for $9. What you need to fab up is the links. You'll need 6 19" long metal strips, at least thats what I cut them to, and then drill the holes for the bolts. You can find the metal strips at any hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot, Sears Hardware)
2. I bought a press (20 Ton) even though I don't know how much I am going to use it for a tranny rebuild. I'm sure its going to be used but don't know how much as I am in the middle of a rebuild myself. I knew I was going to need it for other stuff (differential work) anyways so I just purchased it. I also bought a bearing seperator. Don't know if I was going to need to replace the bearings or not. It was cheap anyways (Harbor Freight).
3. I didn't hold back on buying a GOOD set of snap ring pliers. As much as I had read about how important they were/are for a tranny rebuild I figured they were worth the expense. I bought two different types but can't recall off the top of my head the part numbers for them. Bought them at Sears (Craftsman).
I'll try and get you some pics tommorow of what i've got.....

The torch is to heat up the alignment pins and loosen up the locktite.
I went through 4 Torx bits before I broke down and went out and bought it. At $5 a pop it gets expensive quick!
