Default instructions: how to rebuild pro 5.0

A member asked me for instructions on how to rebuild his pro 5.0 , and I did a little write up for him that was worth sharing. There is another thread on this board with pics and a write-up too that deserves credit, but I couldn't find the link anymore. Enjoy!

-Unbolt the stick/stem that the shift **** threads on to

-Remove the 4 allen head bolts that are on the top of the shifter ( they hold the golden bowl like top to the base) Undo one bolt a little, then the other, then so on, so the top comes off in a level manner

-Take off the top, but be careful because you don't want to lose the 2 springs and washers that are in the shifter base.

-With the top off, and the springs and washers out, you can remove the rest of the shifter handle from the base.

-Clean and degrease everything

-If your shifter has a hard time centering, you can replace the 2 stock springs with ones that are stiffer (local hardware store, lowes, home ripoff, etc)

-the washers will have a worn side, so flip the side that is unworn so that it faces down when reassembling

-I used a lot of lithium grease on everthing, especially on the washer contact points, and the urethane bottom of the shifter handle

-reassemble the components in the reverse order you took them out (use loctite on all bolts)

-have a beer or 2!

I'm guessing when you replace those springs and it centers quicker, it makes it easier to hit third.

over time, you get a little slop in the shifter... thats the washers hes talking about wearing in... replace or flip them, and it takes some of the slop out.

the stiffer springs help with hitting 3rd gear... like someone said above

yeah, also if you get some grit or dirt in the shifter it will cause problems.
