ripped teeth off input shaft gear... oops
this happend in the middle of third gear yesterday
had some friends pitch in to get me back home 60 miles away.
wonder if i can just replace the gears, rinse the trans and clean the magnets best i can and get it back together as opposed to a complete dissassembly... thoughts?

The problem could have occured due to a few miles on the tranny and had some slop in it due to bearing wear. A propper shimming of the bearing end play would be important to do to make sure it doesn't happen again.

That problem comes quit often in high horespower cars. The alloy that the gears are made of just can not handle the torque load for very long. I have seen a viper tranny that had very few miles on it do the same thing. That car made 650whp on motor and 1050whp on nitrous. To fix that for short term the cluster, and the input shaft need to be repalced. For long term you will need a G-force or Liberty gear set and cluster. 700whp seems to be the magic number for some feeling of durability, anything over that and its a ticking time bomb. It does depend on how you use the car though playing on the street with roll ons and it could live .

Or get a factory-built SRT10 Ram T56 with 9310 steel input and cluster/ one piece cluster gear design and thick-wall 30T output yoke set up.Forget the aftermarket faint claims / get a real warranty.

I finally read your sig and with the power you are putting down I don't think there is any way you can insure it doesn't happen again
With the cost of a new cluster and input i'd seriously consider a Liberty gear set

With the SRT-10 Truck Transmissions I have 2 sitting here that have broken the clusters as well. I think the 1-piece design was good but I have not seen it hold anymore than the original 2 piece design. This truck was stock and the teeth vertually snapped off and the other was a Twin Turbo making 725hp to the tires. I still think the Liberty or G-Force would be the best bet for long term usage.

take it to the track then see
this is one of two trans's i have so the car was only broken a matter of hours.
both input shafts are oem and both have around 20k on them, mostly over 800rw.. i'm not dissapointed it broke, but sure was inconvenient to break so far from home.
this time last year i had just broken my second output shaft of the season, upgraded that end to the viper shaft and that is holding up good.

Damn Dave, you broke on your first pass didnt you? Thats why you should be towing that thing to the track with slicks/skinnines on instead of street driving it with street tires :p

i got it apart finally last night (got the counter shafts out without pressing off any gears on the main shaft!)
loooks like only damage was to the counter shaft and of course the input shaft itself, i dont know what else you 'should' replace while its apart.. it doesnt grind shifts and i can't see any damage to the other gears.. but the teeth i pulled out of the case from the input shaft were blue from heat.

it looks like the only damaged parts are the counter shaft and the input shaft.. maybe i should get new bearings for them both in case they rode away from each other causing the stripping? would be great if they could ship with the bearings installed unless i can do it with a block of wood and a hammer
