Question will the dealership be able to tell a tranny swap?!?

my tranny is garbage basically...it grinds and pops out of gear...the sliders and syncros are the culprits..

My buddies t56 is not and is under warranty for another year

He offered his tranny to me as a direct swap, then he would take mine over and see if they will fix it under warranty....

will this work?? or are they specifically numbered blabla....

I know this may sound like a **** ball thing to do, but I am very broke and cannot afford a rebuild at the moment, plus I would like to drive my car again!

Thanks

I don't think they're marked. That is sort of a shitty thing to do, good that you have good friends though cause I'm sure that is considered some type of fraud.

transmissions have the VIN number stamped into the casing. No doubt GM saw this type of fraud since the 30's. I'm guessing that the service tech form has an instruction to check the number. Dont do it.

You'd have to have it installed at the dealer or they most likely won't cover it under warranty after that, because they have no way to gaurantee that the 2nd tranny was new when it was put in, or that the work was done right.

That's what I picture them saying, at least.

no, what i'm saying is that, if the tranny was ever replaced under warranty, what number is on it then?

If you buy a new tranny from the dealer, the installing tech has to fill out the paperwork with required info IF you want to have any warranty. The replacement I just put into a ford truck was this way. As far as swapping non warrantied parts into any car, there isnt anything illegal with that as far as I know. Just dont try to take the car into GM for warranty work and insist that they take care of you.
