Stock 98 transmission? Use a non-synthetic Dexron III ATF for the transmission fill. You'll need 4 quarts. The clutch fluid is standard DOT 3 brake fluid.

Just make sure it is non-synthetic Dexron III ATF (i.e. NOT Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc).

There is no real reason not to run synthetic ATF. As long as the fluid meets the required specs (ie: Dex III) you will be good to go.

It isn't that you can't use it...it's that you should be careful when you are choosing it. I misspoke earlier.

oh, nice link, lots of helpful info. so it looks like either GM synchro or Royal Purple, which I was thinking on using. Anyone use either or both, and have a preferance?

Royal Purple is very similar to the Mobil 1 I have in my transmission right now, which I like a lot. GM synchromesh is pretty thick compared to that...doesn't mean it is good or bad, just different.

I used Mobil 1 ATF which is a safe synthetic according to the link above and my trans shifted smoother than with a non synthetic. A worthwhile inexpensive upgrade.
