If you've operated awhile like that I would think you have a vibe issue as well as a leaker. Since the yokes are not heat threated I would expect that yo may have work into the spline with that scant engagemnt- I would get a new yoke. You may be kucky and the rear bushing and seal is ok after you get the shaft length fixed.

That looks a little short to me. When I bought my new driveshaft, I was told you want it to be 3/4" - 1" from being bottomed out against the tranny. My PST shaft is 1" longer than stock and is 3/4" from bottoming out against the tranny. Car is a M6 and has a 9" in it also. Hope that helps.
