Joined the Navy, have a big question
Hi,
I just joined the Navy recently, and am slated to go to boot camp in mid June. My age had restricted me from gaining officer status (Cap off 29 years old). I was informed that I would still be considered due to my high ASVAB (85) and my B.S. Degree, if I became an enlisted member.
When I went to the career counselor he seemed quite animated to get me into the IT program, as he stated that not many people were going there, or were qualified for the position. I don't really want to be in the IT program, as i'd rather be a supply officer. Is it really hard to transfer over to officer status? How long does the process take? Any insightful information i'll greatly appreciate.
Thanks

Why can't you go officer? Did you speak with an officer recruiter? In OCS we had lots of people over 30 going for SupO. Since you're already committed, work hard and apply for a commission when you can.

I joined with the Air Force orriginally and went to the navy later on so it is possible...Id wait a while, get your foot in the door and once you get to your first command talk to your chief and see if they cant get a seaman to admiral program for you. Im working on mine right now.

You dont need seaman to admiral since you already have a BS degree. The supply side is wide oprn for officers. The IT rate is also wide open. It will take 2 years once you get to you frst command before they will let you transfer into an officer program. But there are waivers for EVERYTHING. Like someone stated b4. If you want to get in as an officer you might want to think about another branch. All branches have so's.

what is your major in and what was your GPA for your degree. What school you went too also plays a big part of the decision to allow you to be a officer. Its a common misconception that if you have a degree then your automatically qualified as an officer. Thats farther from the truth. The officer recruiter is looking for a technical degree with a GPA of 3.4 and up. The harder the school the lower the GPA can be. Your age does play a part of the recruiting process. If you have anymore questions please ask me.

because you dont HAVE to go until you swear in the second time
85 is pretty good, honestly. Out of the nearly 300 Master-at-arms I support only 30 or so are above 65. Most hover at 50ish.... LOL

85 is actually damn good. The national average is only a 40.
i wouldnt be suprised if the guys who scored a 40 had to be reminded to breath.

I graduated with a Bachelor's Of Science Degree in Criminal Justice with a 3.3 GPA from Cal State L.A. University.
I was told not to study for the ASVAB as I did well on the practice one, according to them. Had I studied i'm sure I could have gotten higher then an 85 (I've been out of school for over 7 years).
