they are the rear end gear ratio 2.73:1, or 3.23:1
for every 2.73 turns of the driveshaft...the wheel rotates 1 time.
lower the ratio, the lower your rpm will be at a given speed
arbitrary numbers:
2.73 gears at 75mph = 1800rpm
3.23 gears at 75mph = 2100rpm
lower gears make for better fuel economy, but poor performance
higher gears make for bad economy but better performance

+1 Teke. From a manual trans perspective....stock 3.42s pulled nicely, had decent reving speed (getting into the powerband), and the gears would go to a higher mph. Put the 4.10s in.....completely different animal. Powerband comes up quick, revs much faster, and overall is faster. Gears don't go as high mph wise, and fuel economy suffers a little...but so far one of the best mods I have made.

getting rid of the 2.73s for 3.23s-3.73s will give you a great performance boost. I went from 2.73 to 3.73 in my 90 Camaro and dropped my quarter mile time by about .7 seconds. I have the GU5 rear end in my 02 Z28 so i'll probably stick with them but if I had the 2.73 rear they would have been gone a long time ago. And BTW, it is "difference" not "different s"

all in all its a 10 bolt 7.5in gm rear end. do some reading on them. at least you have the automatic, ive seen some fast cars with the 10 bolts. but if you add any modifications the rear might want to give, and with traction.
it should last for a while, long as you dont take it to the track often and run sticky tires.
the g80 is a new differential they put in them, as far as im concerned, they're all the same 10 bolts.
