Default What factory heads will work with a LS1?

I was wanting to put some diffrent heads on my car as well as a LS6 intake and a comp cam around 600 lift. I have mid length headers no cats and a borla muffler SLP box and 3.73 gears. I would like to be in the mid 400's hp. Because I still drive it alot. Either that or I will leave the car alone and then put a 6.0 motor, what all is involved in doing this? I have found some good long blocks here for 550.00.

ya know, nothing wrong with going the route you want to go as far as buying a block, but you can also buy a complete short or long block, not saying its a better idea, just another idea, texas speed has a 383 and a 408, and they come in around 3700.....if you buy a block, and the rotating assembly, pay for balancing and having it assembled if you dont do it yourself plus all the hassle, i just think its another route you should look into. if you have bank they also have long blocks for under 7k......243 and 317 ans well as 5.3 heads will all fit to answere your question as to which factory heads will still work on an ls1, and honestly if you want to hit mid 400's you will find it a lot easier if you get some long tube headers. mid 400's is gettin up there for a stock bottom end so youll need to sqeeze most all the hp you can get, also if you go to a 6.0 block you will definitally want some long tubes. hope this helps

*not saying you cant hit mid 4's with mid length but most the guys here will tell you to just get some long tubes while your at it. you can find a good set for 400 bucks and sell the mid length for half of that so.....

Yeah thats what I have been reading. They were on the car when I bought it. I have always believed in Hooker so I think I am going to get a set of super comp LT's. Is it possible to get in the mid 4's with a LS6 set up and a nice cam and the exsisting mods minus the mid lengths?

Yeah look into some heads though you can get some 243s for about 600.00 on this site and some ported ones around 1000.00 or so with some good ported heads and 228 and up cam you should def be in the 400s. Remember you need a stall and when it gets dynod A4 cars dyno low but still perform well.

The car is still on the street and is a second car, so I drive it alot. Would a yank 3500 be enough or should I go with a 4000? Im new to the LS motors. Ive been in a cave building fox bodies for the last 11 years. Will all LS heads interchange? I was looking at some 6.0 heads because they flow really good, will they work?

The 6.0 heads are are 317 castings and have 72cc chambers so they are best only if F/I is in your plans. As stated above the 243's are the best LS1 GM casting and give you a compression bump with 64cc chambers.

If you can't find any here go check Corvette Forum classifieds.

like said above the 317 (6.0) heads flow really well but they will lower your compression, which you dont want on a NA motor.

yea i mean if you have longtubes catback full air intake , ls6 intake, some nice heads and a nasty cam you can hit 430ish pretty easy, not that 450 is out of the question but it would be hell of a lot easier if you got rid of the ls6 intake and got a 90/90 or 92/92 setup....bear in mind that 450 whp in a stalled auto would be like having 475 whp or more in a 6 speed....and to get the 6 speed up much higher is a BITCH and gonna cost some money....if you go with ported ls6 heads (243's) and say a ms3 which would prolly be a big cam for a ls6 intake and 243's and full bolt ons you can maybe hit like 430...then go with a 92/92 setup you should be able to push it closer to 450

and if you really are just fixed to hit that 450 mark and you have cash you can get like a set of rockers 8-whp about 400 bucks or more....electric water pump 5-15 whp 650 bucks or so....bigger MAF also but that dont go buy on your own talk to a tuner first bc they are hard to tune..then the 92/92 should be a solid 20whp so between the three that would be 30whp more than the 420/435whp you would get with just a plain good heads cam setup.
