Default dumb thermostat question

so im buying the SSRA ram air kit and to compensate for the car running a little hotter im installing a 160 degree thermostat. im seeing thermostats on summit and jegs for 5 bucks, both 180 and 160, however for 40 bucks theres the thermostat and what looks like the housing for it. do i need the new housing or will just the thermostat do. also i live in flordia so im correct in choosing the 160 over the 180 right?

Depends on what year waterpump you have. I think 97-02 have the the thermostat and housing as 1 piece--that's the $40 one. If you have a newer waterpump the housing is separate from the thermostat so all you have to buy is the thermostat which is why it's cheaper... Not super sure on the years but I do know the new ones don't have the housing included. Maybe someone else will chime in.

yeah just looked it up. 2003+ has the newer design, cheaper thermostat that you reuse your old housing.

Also make sure to have your fan setting changed to take advantage of the thermo.

My 98 has the stock waterpump and the thermostat was a separate piece from the housing.

A t-stat change won't do much without changing the fan settings. If you don't change the fans, the only time you'll notice cooler temps will be at steady speed cruising.

I like to keep the stock t-stat and just change fan settings, but I don't live in Florida.

You can't compensate for a lack of airflow, with a lower
temperature thermostat. Open is open and it's still heat
throw limited.
