Money to burn
I have about $1400 to spend on mods to my car (see Sig for current status).
I am 99% sure I'm going to buy a lid, but otherwise where should I spend my money and on what. Keep in mind I'm a relative newb to most of this stuff, so if it's anything very hard I'll also probably have to pay to have it done. Also, I'd like to keep my street tires and not have to shell out the $$$$$$$$$ for nittos every 10k miles
I do want to make the car faster though. Mainly off the dig.

To be as general as possible, you can go one of quite a few ways... power, handling/launching (suspension), or cosmetic/audio.
Now, considering your talking about the lid, I'd think that you were into the power mods. Remember first and foremost that the most basic thing to help your car increase power is to let her breathe. With $1400, I'd do a full exhaust with LTs, lid, and a nitrous kit (might have to save a couple hundred more for the n2o kit). But that's just me

Stall converter (any will be an improvement, but I'd choose like a 3600-3800, $700) , tranny cooler ($50-$75), full exhaust ($750 for pacesetters/ypipe/hooker catback). You really should get Nittos, if you don't do alot of smoky burnouts, they'll last longer than 10k.. at least my old set did. Thats around $1500, but you can buy several of those parts used.
Good Luck,

Yeah, full exhaust is a necessity. I wouldn't go with the pacesetter's, though, not good quality. Longtubes with a y pipe and a catback will help you out A LOT. I would also recommend rearend gears (thunderracing.com), 3:73's if its a daily driver, 4:10's if it isn't.

Get the basics done first then move on to the bigger stuff.
FRA or FTRA w/ paper WIX filter
Lid (Direct-Flo)
PTB (S2)
Retain stock MAF (dont F with it)
LT`s w/ True Duals w/ dumps and chambered mufflers
Stall 3500
LCA`s
SFC`s
STB
then move on to .......
Cam
Heads
Pulley
Tuning
which should all be done in one install !

Top early A4 mods (my picks):
Converter, probably a TCI SSF 3500/2.5; tranny cooler
Decent, but not crazy expensive, air lid (cheap)
Home port / bump-stop your TB and snug your cables for WOT=WOT (free)
EGR mod, that intake opening "pecker" carefully cropped (free)
Whatever !MAF means, probably undo it until you can tune
Good tires
Better exhaust (early manifolds suck and the stock catback is
no prize; wait for tuning ability if going to headers)
Programming capability
On this last: '98s are the redheaded stepchild. I recommend you
keep an eye on HPTuners for their intro of the '98 capability (as
well as their delivery and any learning from the first release of the
'99-'02 product. If they come through this will be your best tuning
/ logging option. Predator is not available for you. Meanwhile a
used (properly "unloaded") HPP3 may be the ticket for fan control
and shift settings, if you buy right you can resell it at no loss
when you get "real" tuning capability).

you need more money
First of all, what gears are you running right now. If they are 2.73's I would step up to 3.42's
LT Headers
Good Converter
Since you have a 98 I would say you should look into the new 78mm LSX intake and ported TB
And of course you need some tires to get it to hook. I could list others but I have already gone way past your budget

Yeah I say for sure Long Tube Headers I have Hooker LT's and off road Y and its awesome!! Then I would look into gears either 3.42's or 3.73's especially if you have the 2.73 gear stock it holds u back ALOT-And as mentioned above the intake is another item I would put on my list since its a 98!! your probably gonna need to save a few hundred more dollars but it will be worth it trust me!!!Oh and tires are important to-You need to be able to hook if you wanna run some decent times!!!!!

I would focus on suspension first and then basic boltons. I say suspension first because it will help you use what you already have and be a great foundation to bulid on. Just my .02.
