Default New to LS1 tech. Mod suggestions?

Just picked up 98 TA automatic with only 80K on it. Got a great deal on it. Right now it's bone stock. Don't have a lot of money to sink into it. Any suggestions for cheap or free mods? Looking for. The best bang for my buck to wake it up a bit...

Well how much do you want to spend? You can do a ram mod and bump stop mod for free. I'm sure there might be one or two others but i'm kind of new to LS1's myself

Start of with a lid and a catback, if you still have money left over get headers and a ory.

Get a lid. Any lid is fine. $90 new, $50-75 used. As for free mods: port/polish TB and bump stop mod, TB coolant bypass, free ram air, cut down EGR tube in TB, and descreen MAF. Those are your options, but there is debate over whether some of them are worthwhile, or even safe. I don't know enough to give a concrete answer one way or another lol. Anyway, go to installuniversity.com. They have a lot of helpful step-by-step articles on how and what to do to these cars for little or no money.

So when you say you don't have a lot of $$, how much are you talking about? That would make this question a lot easier to answer.

I would have to respectfully disagree with the bolded part based on information in the OP.

1. 80k miles and 15 years on the 4l60 transmission
2. OP doesn't "have a lot of money to sink into it"

Given that, I would avoid anything that could lead to a significant increase in the likelihood of OP needing to sink money into a transmission rebuild. Even with a bigger cooler, I would avoid a converter for a 4l60 that old and used until I was financially able to fix/rebuild/replace the transmission just in case.

It's possible the OP could do a converter swap and have no issues. But the risk is there, and the risk is unacceptable if you don't have the financial means to deal with it should the risk materialize.

OP, I'd stick to modifying you intake, which will be really cheap, until you can afford to get into more in-depth modding. If your price range is enough for it, I would look into long-tube headers as well, but that's a big bump in cost over simple intake changes.
