V6 vs V8 f-bodies
This is probably a somewhat silly question - but is there an easy way to tell the difference? Since I ordered the GTO I've been paying attention to the f-bodies more and realize I don't know the difference at all. I know obviously the cars with the big ram air hoods are LS1's, and the SS camaros are, but after that I'm completely lost.
Please don't flame too much - I'm just trying to find out if there's an easy answer.

LS1 cars are any type of Firebird and any type of Camaro. You have Firehawk, Trans-AM and Formula for Firebird and Z-28 and SS for Camaros. I don't think I'm leaving any out. I'm drawing a blank.

other than the badging, i usually tell by two tailpipes on the ls1 and one pipe for the 6cyl, other than that if you see one take off from a light and it takes a minute to get to 30mph instaed of 4 sec, its a v6

sometimes firebirds (V6) will have a solid spoiler whereas trans ams (V8) have a raised spoiler
Ram Air = hood scoop = V8
SS = hood scoop = V8
Z28 = no hood scoop = V8
Trans Am = no hood scoop = V8
Ram Air = hood scoop = V8
SS = hood scoop = V8
Z28 = no hood scoop = V8

the v6 camaros only have one exhust pipe from factory, and the Z and SS have dual tips,the v6 says camaro on the side below the mirrors, and the V8 either say Z28 or SS
also the v6's have their roofs painted the same color as body and the v8's have a black roof, and the wheels are usually not as nice on the v6's, but the best way to find out is to get them to rev up the engine

The "Camaro" side badging was only on 93-95 3.4L equiped cars, the 96+ 3.8L had no badging at all on Camaros. But some guys remove them from their V8's so that isn't always a good choice. The early body style 4th gen V6's cars had drum brakes out back. Wheels and exhaust are changed quite frequently so that can be tricky to go by, but the exhaust note will probably give it away. The body matched roof color, as mentioned before, is an good indicator as well.
The TAs, WS6's, and SS's are pretty obvious with there added appearance pieces, but to tell between a Formula/Z28 and their V6 siblings takes a little more.

Don't forget the lights. V6 Firebirds and Formulas both have the same two lights on each side of the front bumper for 4 total, where as the Trans Am and WS6 have two big fog lights right in the middle of the front nose

The V6s with the High Performance package have the dual looking exhaust like the TA. The fog lights are different though. I liked the lights on the Firebird better than my WS6. Other wise there is no way to tell from looking.
But, the TA and Formula have the raised spoiler and the Firebird does not. I do not know if the Formula came with the low spoiler or the raised for 98+.
WS6 FRONT (this is my baby):

The 1998+ Formula looks almost exactly like the V6 (low wing and all). The only easily visible difference is the side badging ("Firebird" vs. "Formula") and the exhaust (single vs dual tips). Formulas could get almost all the same options as the T/A (including Firehawk and WS6).
