As applied to a 4th gen, this is false. 1LE was a suspension/bushing package, and did not include a different axle.

I've had both, and prefer the Auburn for it's (IMO) smoother and quieter operation. There always seems to be some chatter from the Torsen style when coasting at certain speeds or under certain conditions, even when they were brand new. Those same situations have produced none of that sort of noise from the Auburn version, in my experience.

The Auburn unit is MUCH stronger BUT when I replaced my Torsen with a Auburn I found the car had a vibration over 55mph. Was slight but enough you could notice. Putting the Torsen back in stopped the vibration. I checked the Auburn carefully and it was painfully obvious it wasn't balanced. Its a heavy housing and should have been IMO. Another problem with the Auburn is you CAN NOT use synthetic gear oil. If you do the unit will wear its cone clutches out in a few thous miles.

I don't see this so much as a problem but rather something that just must be remembered. Stick to 80w90 conventional gear oil with the GM LSD additive and there shouldn't be any accelerated wear or other driveability issues during its normal service life.
