Best LS mpg w/ 400 torque????
I have a 2wd '69 C10 w/ an old school rebuilt 350 (375hp and ft lbs). It gets around 15mpg with my .82 overdrive in my TKO600. Im starting a small business where I haul a 16' trailer with 3 tons loaded on it. I will be driving up to 1,000 miles a week... 15mpg doesn't sound awesome. I heard with an LS I can get over 20 and maybe 24mpg...??? I don't know LS's, that's why I came here.
I am looking for enough power to comfortable pull my trailer up mountain passes and get 20+ mpg. I am not scared of modifying the LS to get where I want to be. I assume I would add dual electric fans, full length headers, exhaust, and maybe a head, cam and intake swap. If my mpg gain isn't going to be at least a gain of 5mpg I am not sure it will be worth it until a year or two down the road when my business is more stable.
My buddy said a 6.0L w/ LS6 heads or 799 heads wouldn't be a bad option... what do you guys think? I have searched for a couple hours trying to find answers in the older posts and on google, but I didn't really see much other than some people posts on there mpg.
Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it.

6.0L Iron motor sounds like a great idea. A stock LS1 puts out ~350 flywheel tq stock, I would look into the 6.0 truck motors for more grunt. They can be found pretty cheap too, if you know where to look. If your budget is higher, LS3's and newer gen LS can hit 400tq EASY. Stock even, again, depending on your budget.
I'm not sure of the towing capabilities of LS's, but they can pack some serious torque with the right setup. Maybe even a diesel swap would be better suited for a tow monster?
in any case..welcome to LS1Tech!
I would definitely talk to some of the better known vendors around here. Tickperformance, Texasspeed, Marylandspeed..go to the sponsor subforums.
