Default clutch issues

Can anyone explain what is the difference between the master and slave cylinder on the clutch, and should I replace either/both of them for a basically stock engine? I have been having trouble with my clutch sticking in halfway and I have to pull it back with my foot and pump it to build up pressure. I tried bleeding the clutch via mityvac but this really didn't do much good. I am going to keep trying with the mityvac but if this doesn't work I am considering the drill mod. I figured while I was in there I might as well replace the master and or slave. I heard the Mcleod was a good option for the master. Any suggestions?
