GM put new rings on my old engine because they found out that the gap in one set of rings on my piston was lined up. This caused excessive oil consumption via blow back. The elbow between the MAF and the throttle body had accumulated oil and my intake was lined with oil.
The piston slap is "normal" according to GM. When engine warms and everything expands the tolerances close up which will cause the piston slap to go away or quite down.
I fought for almost 1 year to get them to fix it.
Good luck.
