Default Newer with more miles? Or older with less miles?

Okay, so let's say you are deciding between 2 cars that are more or less identical and are the same price. One of them is a 1999 with 20k miles, and the other is a 2002 with 45k miles.... Which would you choose based on miles and year alone?

I'm not really talking about in terms of which car is better, just which you would choose based on the miles and year alone... For the purpose of this post, let's say they are the EXACT same car, except for the miles and the year (yes I know there is a difference between the 99 and 02, but let's say there isn't).

This is just my $.02, as i find myself asking similar questions when looking LS1 cars....I think the '99 would be better. I mean okay yeah the exhaust manifolds aren't as good as far as flow, but who cares 9 times outta 10 your puttin headers on it, same with the cam. The Intake is probably one of the selling points for the '02.The '99 may have a slight piston slap, but as everyone knows its nothing to worry about. But i mean you also gotta look at each car individually too, which ones had only 1 owner, in better shape, which one drives better or feels more solid...

So the piston slap isn't dangerous if left untreated?

Also, do you think the 25k mile difference between the cars would make that much of a difference as far as reliablity?

Gm put out service bulletins on that issue, and said it was normal and not to worry about, i got a buddy who bought a 99 SS back in '03 and it had 70k on it, Bonestock car, i never once heard any kind of abnormal engine noise or piston slap or anything, and i would've bcause at the time i was a die-hard LT1 fan, but his sh*t was solid...so i wouldn't really worry about; wouldn't stop me from picking up a prestine LS1 car thats for sure! Now the 25k difference, it really depends on how the cars were treated and maintained...theres guys runnin all kinds of H/C and F.I. on stock bottom ends...really the LS1s and all LSx Gen III motors are tough! Really GM did good when they were designing the aluminum based SB. Like i said though ,man i'd test drive each one and see which one felt better to be sure....best of luck!

I voted for the 99 w/20,000 miles. I would rather have 25,000 less miles then a 3 year newer identical car.

both seem like good buys. I might favor the 46,000 mile car because 20,000 miles over 8 years jsut seems kinda weird to me. Thats a case of potential odometer rollback.

It's actually because it is a Firehawk and was more than likely a garage queen...

Some people don't drive 'em much. Mine will be four years old in July and I have only 12,380 on it now.

I assume you haven't seen either car in person. I'd want to look at the exterior before I made my decision. Maybe you can find out if one or either was garage kept.

Well i just bought a 99 with 63K on the clock over a newer higher mileage car. So you know my stance on that...

But as far as some people being suspicious about the low mileage, some people just garage queen the cars. I have a 96 impala ss i bought 5 years ago now with 34K on teh clock. It now has 47 or 48K on the clock. It only came out for a couple out of state road trips and those trips equal about 80% of those miles. Other then that i took it out here and there to warm it up and get the fluids moving maybe take it to work or a car show or something. Otherwise it sits tucked away in its nice safe garage. People may say cars are made for driving etc etc, but i enjoy having the car and taking it out for a spin every now and then. I plan on passing the car down to my kid one day so i take care of it and try to keep the miles off it. Its just one of those cars that will always be a classic in my eyes.

If you find someone that had the same mentality then decided for whatever reason to sell youve struck gold more then likely. As my impy is pampered beyond beleif.

Himm save a couple grand or shave off some wear and tear, and buy a used LS6 intake for a few hundred and bolt it on in half an hour... Wow tough choice lol!

The only thing that might hold me back from the 1999 would be the million shades of grey interior. The 2002 came with a solid black interior that looks 100x better IMO.

Although I'd buy whatever car was in better shape, a 25k difference in miles in not a whole lot.

If I ever buy another LS1 car, I'd get whatever year I found at a good price. There is no good or bad year and they are all almost identical.

How much 'treatment' can really be done for that, though?
